Austin Political, Business and Military Veterans Take to the Steps of the State Capitol in Show of Support of Operation Enduring Opportunity
Veterans Day 2012 Marks One-Year Anniversary of Franchise Industry Campaign; Huge Strides Made to Improve Veteran Employment and Entrepreneurship Opportunities
AUSTIN, Texas – This Veterans Day, unemployment rates for young veterans continue to hover near 20%. However, through the International Franchise Association’s (IFA) initiative Operation Enduring Opportunity, a campaign to hire and recruit 75,000 veterans, their spouses, and 5,000 wounded warriors by 2014, things are looking up.
To honor this initiative and ongoing effort, the IFA and Austin political, business and military veteran leaders are coming together on November 12, 2012 at 10 a.m. on the south steps of the Texas State Capitol Building to showcase major progress made in fighting veteran unemployment through franchise ownership and employment opportunities. The devoted group in Austin will strengthen the message to support continued advancements for veterans – a call out that will be heard across the country at similar events taking place in select U.S. cities.
A pair of prominent Austin-area political figures, U.S. Rep John “Judge” Carter and State Representative Charles Schwertner, speaking at the event will emphasize the importance of expanded opportunities needed to ensure veterans and their families are able to make productive transitions to civilian life after military duty.
Other Austin area military veterans, statewide military veteran supporters and local business leaders speaking at the event include:
• Pamela Sapia – District Director – U.S. Small Business Administration
• John Spahr – Past State Commander, Texas VFW
• Gordon Logan – Founder and CEO of Sport Clips
• Jeff Connally – President and CEO of CMIT Solutions
• Steve Dixon – Vice President of Franchise Development for Children’s Lighthouse Learning Centers
• Keith Mathias – Director of Strategic Market Development for WIN Home Inspection
The event begins on Veterans Day, November 12, 2012, at 10:00 am on the South Steps of the State Capitol Building in Austin. Contact Jamie Izaks at email@example.com or (847) 580-4233 for more information and to RSVP.
Last Veterans Day, the International Franchise Association launched an industry-wide campaign, Operation Enduring Opportunity, to hire as team members and recruit as franchise business owners 75,000 veterans and military spouses, plus 5,000 wounded warriors, by the end of 2014. On the campaign’s one-year anniversary, franchise industry leaders will announce major progress towards Operation Enduring Opportunity’s goals and will premiere a short video about the importance of enabling veterans to have successful careers as franchise business owners and team members.
“As we continue to work hard each and every day to extend career opportunities to our nation’s veterans, we are gratified to recognize the tremendous progress that has been made,” said Steve Caldeira, CFE, IFA’s President & CEO. “On Veterans Day, let us remember that our freedom comes at a price. We are proud to help our nation’s veterans fulfill their dreams and find career opportunities here at home.”
With its training, structure, systems and focus on operational excellence, franchising can provide an ideal career path for returning veterans to become leaders in the civilian economy. According to the U.S. Census, there are more than 66,000 veteran-owned franchise businesses in the United States. The IFA’s VetFran strategic initiative was launched in 1991 to help Gulf War veterans transition.
